The African Scops-owl is distributed throughout much of Africa south of the Sahara. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in semi-open woodland and savanna with scattered trees up to about 2,000 metres.

It feeds mainly on insects which it hunts by hawking insects in flight.
