The Blue-spotted Wood-dove is distributed in tropical Africa from Senegal in the west to Mozambique in the east. It is found in moister habitats than Black-billed Wood-dove T. abyssinicus such as forest edges, gallery forest and dense woodland.

It is similar to Black-billed Wood-dove but is darker and has a dusky-red bill with a yellow tip.

The song is a series of plaintive hoos.
