The Cinnamon-breasted Bunting is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara and in the south of the Arabian Peninsula. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found on rocky hillsides and in open savanna with rocky outcrops.

The scientific name is derived from the local name in Botswana for finches.
