The Hottentot Teal is distributed in Africa From Ethiopia to South Africa and Madagascar with a disjunct population in Chad. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found on fresh and alkali water bodies preferably with floating vegetation.

It is distinguished by its pale blue bill, the dark smudge on its neck and its green speculum which is very noticeable in flight but can be seen on this photo.
