The Little Rock-thrush is distributed in the Horn of Africa and through Uganda and Kenya to northern Tanzania as well as in the south-west of the Arabian Peninsula. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found on rocky slopes and scrub with juniper and euphorbia bushes from 300 to 3,000 metres.

It is smaller than Common Rock-thrush M. saxatilis and it quivers its tail like a redstart.
