Ankarafantsika, Madagascar Schlegel's Asity is endemic to the north-west of Madagascar. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in deciduous dry forest and in rain forest up to 800 metres. |

The male in breeding plumage, seen here, is unmistakable with a bright multicoloured caruncle around the eye.
This virtually disappears in non-breeding plumage and is lacking in the female.
Hermann Schlegel was a German zoologist who worked at Leiden for Jacob Temminck and who was the first to use trinomials to indicate sub-species. |
