The Yellow-spotted Bush-sparrow is distributed from the Horn of Africa south to Tanzania and sporadically across Africa south of the Sahara. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in a variety of savanna and woodland up to 1,800 metres.

Its English name derives from the yellow spot at the base of the throat but this is usually concealed. It can just be made out in photo 3.
