The Black-and-rufous Warbling-finch is distributed from central Argentina through south-east Paraguay and Uruguay into south-east Brazil. It is found in shrubs, trees and gardens and is often associated with water.

Many authorities, such as the AOU lump this species with Black-and-chestnut Warbling-finch Poospiza whitii

Upperparts are browny-grey while underparts are cinnamon-rufous with white in the centre of the belly. The cheeks are dark and there is a whitish superciliary.
