The Cherry-throated Tanager was thought to have disappeared until it was rediscovered in 1998. It is now in 2026 only known from 2 sites in the forests of the mountains of Espirito Santo. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. Thanks to conservation efforts the known population has grown from 10 birds in 2020 to 20 birds in 2023. It is classified as Critically Endangered.
