The Dusky Spinetail is distributed on the eastern slope of the Andes and adjacent foothills from central Colombia through Ecuador to northern Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in the dense undergrowth of forest edge and secondary growth as well as bamboo thickets from 250 to 1,350 metres.
