Moriche Oriole Icterus cayanensis chrysocephalus(aka Epaulet Oriole Icterus cayanensis)

The Moriche Oriole is found in eastern Colombia, Ecuador and Peru as well as south east Venezuela, the Guianas and Brazil north of the Amazon. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

As its name implies, it has a strong association with Moriche palms Mauritia flexuosa where it nests, suspending its basket nest from a palm frond. Away from the nest it is found at forest borders and in swampy areas.

It is black with the crown, shoulders, rump and thighs yellow.

Most authorities now treat it as a sub-species of Epaulet Oriole Icterus cayanensis
