The Rufous-backed Inca-finch is endemic to Peru where it is found in dry montane scrub between 2,300 and 4,000 metres in the Upper Marañón valley. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.
|It is found at higher elevations than the Great Inca-finch I. pulchra. It is also slightly larger than the Great Inca-finch with more extensive black on the face, more rufous on the back and paler underparts.|
