Pantanal Snipe (Gallinago paraguaiae)
(aka South American Snipe)
South American Snipe, near Uruguaiana, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, August 2004 - click for larger image The Pantanal Snipe is distributed throughout most of South America except the far south where it is replaced by the Magellanic Snipe G. magellanica. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. The taxonomy has been a bit confused and these two species have been lumped by some authorities. It has even been considered a sub-species of the Common Snipe Gallinago gallinago to which it bears a lot of similarities.
