This bird is fairly common around marshes and ponds so the Pantanal is an ideal habitat. It is distributed in central South America with disjunct populations in south-east Brazil and near the coast around the mouth of the Amazon. See the distribution map at xeno-canto.

The entirely glossy black male has a particularly long and slender bill which helps to identify it from the Chopi Blackbird.
