Photos 1, 3 and 4 show males in breeding plumage. Photo 2 shows a female and photo 5 shows a male in eclipse plumage followed by a female.

Mallard, Monks Eleigh, Suffolk, England, April 2015 - click for larger image In eclipse plumage, although the general appearance approaches that of a female, the bill is yellow rather than orange with black and the breast is reddy-brown rather than buff.

It is a very widespread dabbling duck and the origin o almost all the domestic ducks that we see. See the distribution map at xeno-canto.
