Until recently it was
considered a sub-species of Thamnophilus punctatus but
this complex has been clarified in papers by Morton L. Isler,
Phyllis R. Isler & Bret M. Whitney, Biogeography and
systematics of the Thamnophilus punctatus (Thamnophilidae)
complex in Ornithological Monographs 48, Studies in
Neotropical Ornithology honoring Ted Parker (1997), 355-381;
and Morton L. Isler, Phyllis R. Isler, Bret M. Whitney, &
Barry Walker, Species limits in antbirds: the Thamnophilus
punctatus complex continued. (2001), Condor 103(2):
278-286. |

The male has a black central crown and
forehead, grey upperparts with a concealed white interscapular
patch, black wings with white edging and spots and a black tail
with white spots in the middle and at the tip. Underparts are
pale grey. The wings on photos 1 and 3 show a brown tinge on the
primaries which is not mentioned in the literature so they might
show an immature male. |

The female, seen in photos 4
and 7, has a tawny-brown crown, dark brown wings with white
edging and spots and buffy underparts.
